Army officials describe microreactors as a source of reliable baseload electricity for critical missions when the commercial grid fails. The systems are intended to run for years between refueling and to reduce dependence on vulnerable external lines. The Defense Innovation Unit is helping structure the effort around private ownership and milestone payments. Vendors must still complete design, licensing or authorization, site preparation, fuel, security, testing and operational steps before a reactor can serve a base.
The administration’s target is an operating advanced reactor at a domestic military installation by Sept. 30, 2028. The Army says Janus could ultimately support more than 20 microreactors across the Department of War. That larger number is an expectation, not an awarded fleet. Officials deliberately selected multiple designs because some projects may miss cost, schedule or performance thresholds. Competition can protect the mission only if the milestones are measurable and unsuccessful work is stopped before sunk costs dictate the outcome.
Nuclear power brings a different resilience equation from diesel backup. Fuel endurance can be much longer, but security, emergency planning, spent material, construction quality and long-term decommissioning must be addressed. Army officials say they want designs capable of later civilian licensing without major redesign. Independent reporting notes that no microreactor currently supplies the U.S. commercial grid, making Janus both an installation-power project and a technology demonstration.
